Questions to ask a contractor before you hire
Whoever you hire, ask these first. The answers tell you fast who you're dealing with. We've included ours.
Start with this one
Ask any contractor you're considering:
"What is the black diamond on a tape measure for?"
Most tape measures have small black diamonds every 19.2 inches. That spacing lets you fit five floor joists or trusses evenly across an 8-foot sheet of plywood. Anyone who frames for a living knows it right away. If the answer is a shrug, keep asking questions.
Then ask these
- Are you registered with the state? What's your number?
Connecticut requires a Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration for residential work. You can look any contractor up at elicense.ct.gov.
Our answer: CT HIC #0660703.
- Are you insured? Can I see a certificate?
Ask for a certificate of insurance and check that it's current.
Our answer: yes, we're licensed and insured. Ask us for the certificate.
- Who will actually be in my house?
Ask whether it's their own crew, and who will be there day to day.
Our answer: our own crew of five, two master carpenters and a painting and finish team who have worked together for about four years.
- Who does the electrical and plumbing?
That work needs its own licenses.
Our answer: licensed subcontractors handle all mechanical, electrical and plumbing work.
- How will you protect the rest of my house?
Dust travels. Ask exactly what they do about it.
Our answer: drop cloths on the floors, temporary plastic walls to keep dust in the work area, specialized vacuums when sanding, and cleaning during and after the job.
- How will we stay in touch during the job?
Ask how often you'll hear from them, and how to reach them.
Our answer: clear, consistent communication. We're available for check-ins and questions any time of day.
- What happens before I get a price?
A real number needs a real look at the job.
Our answer: a first call about your vision, budget and timing, then a detailed site visit, then a written proposal.
- Why is one bid so much lower than the others?
Ask what the price includes, and who is doing the work.
Our answer: our prices reflect what the job really costs, paying skilled people to do it right, and getting it done on time. There's always someone cheaper. See our price guide for typical ranges.
